Discussion regarding the divestment of mining company shares held in Jakarta, Thursday (23\/2).<\/a>

David Manley, Senior Economic Analyst at the Natural Resource Governance Institute, said that the Indonesian government must be careful with its share divestment policy in foreign-owned mining companies in Indonesia. If this policy is not implemented carefully, Indonesia may not be able to benefit or even be detrimental.<\/p>\n

"Divestment is often linked to state sovereignty, but we need to be careful that this sovereignty can be false," said David in a discussion entitled "Mining Shares Divestment Policy", Thursday (23\/2), in Jakarta.<\/p>\n

According to David, capital to buy shares in foreign-owned mining companies has the potential to burden state finances. If the goal is to obtain income, the government can take the method of implementing high but stable taxes or in the long term.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 51 percent divestment policy is too big. Investors can\u00a0nervous<\/em>\u00a0to this policy. "Moreover, there is a policy tradition that is very easy to change in Indonesia," said David.<\/p>\n

Other speakers in this discussion were Deputy Chairman of Commission VII DPR Hadi Mulyadi and Iqbal Damanik from the Article 33 divestment policy research team.<\/p>\n
