Article 33 Indonesia, as one of the intermediary institutions (Lemtara) appointed by the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH) to channel TERRA-CF 2024 project funds to Indigenous Law Communities (MHA), has held a socialization activity on legality and legal entities for MHA economic institutions from MHA Marena, MHA Orong, and MHA Tangsa on Saturday, February 22, 2025. The activity, which was attended by 27 men and women, aims to increase the understanding of indigenous communities regarding the importance of business legality and procedures for establishing a legal entity. With a legal entity, it is hoped that indigenous business groups can more easily access wider markets, obtain support from the government, and strengthen a sustainable community-based economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community-based businesses run by the Marena, Orong, and Tangsa indigenous peoples (MHA) have significant economic potential in natural resource management. However, to be more competitive and sustainable, the legal aspects of these businesses still need to be strengthened. A lack of understanding of the legal mechanisms and procedures for establishing legal entities is a major challenge faced by MHA. This is exacerbated by limited access to economic development support from the government and other sectors. Therefore, the outreach activities carried out by Article 33 Indonesia serve as a strategic step to provide a more comprehensive understanding and encourage indigenous business groups to develop sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main session of the outreach program began with a presentation by Drs. Sadikin, Head of the Enrekang Regency Cooperatives, SMEs, Manpower, and Transmigration Office, who explained the legality mechanisms for business products and the potential for supporting the economic development of indigenous communities. This material provided participants with a foundation for understanding the importance of legality in running their businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second session then continued with a discussion on the economic independence movement of indigenous communities through customary forest management in Enrekang Regency, presented by a representative from the Indigenous Peoples' Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN). This session aimed to demonstrate how forest resource management can be a key driver in building a community-based economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the outreach activities, the final session featured a discussion with Ir. Patola, owner of Kopi Benteng Alla, who shared best practices in managing a community-based business. This session provided participants with the opportunity to learn directly from entrepreneurs who have successfully built sustainable businesses while upholding local wisdom. This presentation served as a crucial bridge for participants in understanding concrete steps they can implement in developing their own businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants' enthusiasm was evident in the various questions that reflected the real challenges in managing businesses and developing a community-based economy. One issue frequently discussed was determining the expiration date of processed products, with participants wanting to know whether this process should involve the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) or related agencies. Furthermore, technical aspects of coffee cultivation were also a concern, particularly regarding suitable coffee varieties for cultivation in the Toraja region and appropriate fertilization patterns. Administrative obstacles, such as difficulties in obtaining business permits, which now require online registration, were also highlighted. These obstacles highlight the importance of more inclusive support in simplifying access to information and licensing services for indigenous communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a follow-up to the outreach activities, each MHA was encouraged to obtain a Business Identification Number (NIB) and process various other legal documents to strengthen the legal basis for their businesses. This process is expected to increase their understanding of the importance of business legality and legal entities for indigenous peoples' economic institutions. With clearer legality, communities can develop businesses more independently, improve their economic well-being, and maintain the sustainability of their natural resources. Furthermore, this initiative also opens up opportunities for collaboration between indigenous peoples, the government, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other stakeholders in creating a more inclusive and competitive business ecosystem.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
