This study explores the phenomenon of the “natural resource curse” in Indonesia. Despite its rich natural resources, a negative relationship between natural resource wealth and economic growth has been observed, indicating that abundant natural resources do not always bring prosperity, but often become a burden on the economy. This study highlights the challenges of natural resource management in several regions, such as Musi Banyuasin in South Sumatra and Bojonegoro in East Java, to understand the impact of natural resource wealth on human development and economic growth.

This report is part of a study prepared by Article 33 Indonesia in order to better understand the phenomenon of the natural resource curse, both at the national and regional levels. With an analytical approach to development indicators such as Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), poverty rate, and Human Development Index (HDI), this study attempts to identify factors that influence this negative relationship. In addition, this study aims to provide policy recommendations for managing natural resource wealth wisely, so that it can support inclusive and sustainable development.

This study delves deeper into the impact of natural resource management on community welfare in the era of regional autonomy, with an evidence-based approach from local and global research.
