REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR — Mayor Danny Pomanto ordered the Makassar Education and Culture Service (Disdikbud) to tighten transparency and regulations for teachers who receive certification.

The Mayor expressed this when meeting with a number of NGOs working in the education sector accompanied by the Acting Head of the Makassar Education and Culture Department, Ismunandar, and the Secretary of the Makassar Education Department, Ariati Puspasari, on Jalan Batua Raya, last Monday (8/11).

"We are making improvements in the education sector in stages, starting with improving the quality or competency of teachers, especially teachers who receive certification," said Mayor Danny.

According to him, the certification funds received by teachers in Makassar must really be used to increase teacher competency. These funds should not be spent on consumptive spending that has no impact on improving teacher quality.

He hopes that by tightening the regulations for certification recipients, teachers will think about spending certification funds wisely. Prioritize activities that can improve individual quality as teaching staff rather than shopping for consumer goods.

In the future, every teacher who will receive certification is required to have participated in teacher competency improvement activities. Apart from that, Mayor Danny instructed the Education and Culture Office to manage certification funds transparently.

Mayor Danny will take a number of steps following recommendations made by a number of NGOs such as Article 33 and the Indonesian Legislative Monitoring Committee (Kopel). This includes considering the budget for underprivileged families so that children from underprivileged families can receive quality education.

The city government will also reorganize laboratories and libraries in schools to improve the quality of teaching.
