Makassar (ANTARA Sulsel) – The Department of Education and Culture (Disdikbud) Makassar, South Sulawesi has tightened the rules for teachers who will receive certification because the large number of teaching staff utilizing certification funds has not increased their competence and quality.

"We have discussed this with the Education Department and we took this policy because we saw the patterns and tendencies of teachers who have received certification funds," said Makassar Mayor Moh Ramdhan Pomanto in Makassar, Tuesday.

Accompanied by the Acting Head of the Education Service, Ismunandar, the mayor received a visit from NGOs from the Legislative Monitoring Committee (Kopel) and Article 33 discussed the world of education.

Danny Pomanto – the mayor's nickname – said that the certification funds received by teachers in Makassar should be used to increase teacher competency.

However, when certification funds have been disbursed and received by teachers, most of the funds are spent on things that are consumptive in nature and have no impact on improving teacher quality.

Therefore, he hopes that by tightening the regulations for certification recipients, teachers will start to think about spending certification funds wisely.

"Still prioritize spending that can improve individual quality as teaching staff, rather than shopping for consumer goods," he said.

In the future, he continued, every teacher who will receive certification will be required to have participated in teacher competency improvement activities. Apart from that, Mayor Danny instructed the Education and Culture Office to manage certification funds transparently.

"We are making improvements in the education sector in stages, starting with improving the quality or competency of teachers, especially teachers who receive certification," he explained.

Apart from that, Mayor Danny will also take a number of steps following the recommendations produced by Article 33 and Kopel Indonesia.

This includes balancing the budget for underprivileged families so that children from underprivileged families can receive quality education.

The city government also promised to reorganize laboratories and libraries in schools to improve the quality of teaching.
